XP SP2 Security Alerts

G

Guest

I have recently installed SP2, I am running my own Firewall software.

Everytime Windows XP loads up, the Security Alert pops up to tell me my
Firewall status needs to be checked. I load up the Security Centre and tick
the box which says "I have my own Firewall solution......" and the alert goes
away.

The problem is every time I re load windows, that box becomes un ticked
again and it pops up the alert every time.

How can I get XP Security Centre to remember I've ticked this box???

Thanks for any help

Open your Control Panel, then double-click the Security Center icon.
In the left side, click on the link titled: "Change the way Security Center
alerts me". Next, uncheck the Firewall Alert Setting, then click OK.

Hi

Have you tried this one:

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way
Security Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick
when you reboot, or you want to disable the Security Center totally,
you can do the following:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

Hi,

I have done exactly what you have said however it doesnt seem to save the
settings as the next time windows loads the tick boxes are back to ticked.

I will disable the whole lot if thats the only way to stop it alerting me.
Its just the firewall alerts I dont want. The other two (anti virus and auto
updates) work fine and I would like to keep them if possible

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi

As far as I can see, it is a bug in SP2, heaps of people have this
issue, and no one have come up with a explanation of it.

howiezows have another way to "fix" this, locking down the permissions
on the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center in
registry.

Take a look here if you still want the Security Center enabled,
and with a setting that survives a reboot:

I'm a bit reluctant to point to this solution to everybody that have
this problem, because locking down permissions on system files and
system registry keys very often comes back to bite you later on in
upgrade situations (and then you have long gone forgot that you did
this change or you fail to see the connection).
