SP2 problem that Microsoft Tech Support unable to resolve.

After installing SP2 on XP Home I began to continuously encounter Data
Execution Prevention warnings while working in Windows Explorer which
terminates the program and is followed by an error reporting option. I first
created an exception [system > advanced tab > performance > settings > data
prevention execution tab > turn on DEP. . . . > add > explorer.exe]. This
procedure did not work so I then uninstalled SP2 and performed a repair,
however, this created another problem. My system consists of two SATA drives
each of which contains an operating system (Windows XP Pro and Windoes XP
Home). The XP Home hard disk, the one that I am experiencing the problem
with, is divided into three partitions: (1) Program where the operating
system is installed; (2) Flight Simulation which is 70 GB in size; and (3)
Data Storage (100 GB) and which is where I was moving around date when the
Data Execution Prevention warnings occurred.

The problem experienced after uninstalling SP2 was that that some 60 GB of
data on the storage partition was not recognized and the disk information
reported was a total of 40 GB which in actuality is the free space. This
made no sense so I decided to reboot into Windows XP Pro hard disk which
recognized the 60 GB of data storage partition mentioned previously.

Apparently something within SP2 caused this problem by taking control over
the storage partition. I then decided to reinstall SP2 after which the data
was again recognized but which led to yet another problem. I no longer get a
Data Execution Error message followed by error reporting. Instead, when
moving around data using Windows Explorer the program dumps onto a blank
desktop screen at any given moment. I can only recover with CTL-ALT-DEL
bringing up task manager and running explorer.exe (file > new task).

I once again uninstalled SP2 and performed another repair installation which
again resulted in non-recognition of data. Reinstallation of SP2 again
created the sporadic program termination using Windows Explorer.

I have spent the better part of three hours with Microsoft Tech Support and
they are completely baffled as am I. They are still researching a possible
solution to this problem. Thus far we have jointly ruled out other programs
and services. Also I have run thorough adware, spyware and antivirus checks.

Anybody have any ideas?

A fresh install of XP with SP2 slipstreamed is generally a more reliable
way to go, and can save a lot of time in the long run.

Many thanks. That is what I did and it cleared up all the issues I had been
dealing with. I'm amazed that Microsoft tech support would have suggested
this. I also notice several posts indicating that it is preferable to
download SP2 and install it rather than using Windows update. Once again,
