I installed SP2 yesterday. The computer is connected to a router via
a 10/100 network adapter. When the installation was completed, the
lan connection was missing from Network Connections (only the 1394
connection, unused, was present),and the lan adapter was missing from
the Device Manager. However, the lan is functioning.
I have Zone Alarm installed. It was turned off during the
installation.
Any ideas?

Have you gone into Device Manager and had it search for new hardware?
Several people have reported this issue and some have reported this as a
"fix".

Well it does not work on my laptop. I have everything displayed in the
device manager but nothing is shown in the network connection window.
The new firewall configuration dialog shows on the Advanced tab an error
message saying that the settings for the network connection is corrupt
and that I need to press the Restore button in order to reset all
setting back to the standards. But it won't help - situation stays the same.

Check if an updated driver is available for your NIC, then uninstall the NIC
in safe mode (Device Manager is likely to freeze in normal mode). Then
reinstall it.

Unfortunately for me, the NIC isn't in the Device Manager.

I used System Restore and was able to restore everything. I cleaned
up the system by defragging, and removing any spyware, etc, then
disabled all the startup items. I reinstalled SP2, and the exact
same thing happened. The computer works fine, but there is no LAN in
network connections, only 1394 (I have a firewire card, but nothing is
currently connected to it), and no NIC in the Device Manager. I'm
stumped!

I haven't found any references to this happening to anyone else.

Same here! I'm tearing my hair out (what's left of it).
