Windows XP: Missing Authentication tab

Hi

The Authentication tab is missing in the properties dialog box of the wired
network adapter in my laptop. I've already installed Windows XP Service Pack
3, and have also started the Wired AutoConfig service. Still, the
authentication tab is missing for me, and as a result, I can't connect to the
LAN.

Can some expert help pls! Many thanks!

That would depend on exactly what kind of LAN you are trying to connect to.
Wired Autoconfig has nothing to do with traditional server authentication.

Is this a Windows server that's onsite, or some remote system?

Disable and then enable the wired network connection, and see if the
Authentication tab appears. If not, are there any errors from Wired
AutoConfig in Event Viewer? Is the service terminating unexpectedly?

Hi Anteaus

I'm trying to connect to the "Intel(R) 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection".
I'm told by helpdesk that my PC will need to have the "authentication tab" in
order to connect to the LAN. Without the authentication tab, the LAN can't
authenticate I'm a valid user. Is there any specific settings I need to do to
enable the authentication tab?

Hi Steve

I've disabled and enabled the wired network connection, but still the
Authentication tab does not appeared. There is no errors from Wired
AutoConfig, and the service is not terminating unexpectedly.

When I plug in the LAN cable, the status is "Limited or No Connectivity". Is
there any other suggestions for me to try out?

Best regards
Namja

The only other thing I can think of is to reboot and verify that the
service starts automatically and keeps running. Wired AutoConfig is
new in Service Pack 3, and I don't have much experience with it.

Authentication "tab" usually only appears on "wireless adapter" based
network connections. Wired connections do not require an
authentication since the wire has only one point of connection:
router's or switch Ethernet RJ-45 jack.

Check the wire or your laptop's Ethernet RJ-45 jack.

In Windows XP Service Pack 3, the Wired AutoConfig service configures
IEEE 802.1X port-based security settings on wired Ethernet adapters.
It operates in conjunction with IEEE 802.1X authenticating switches
and RADIUS servers to perform 802.1X client authentication for access
to wired Ethernet networks. See:

Hello Namja/Steve, I am also expreiencing this problem.

XP SP3 has been installed to a number of machines and in every case but one,
the Wired AutoConfig service is installed, I have a GPO which sets this
service to Automatic and imports an XML profile to configure the
Authentication tab properties.

However on 1 PC, the Authentication tab is not present, as if the Wired
AutoConfig service is not running, but it is. I think because the
Authentication tab is not displayed, the profile is not being imported.

No number of LAN Connection restarts, or machine reboots resolve the issue.
There doesn't appear to be anything in the event logs for Wired AutoConfig
errors.

Namja, did you find a solution to this? Steve did you find any more
information on this?

Any information gratefully received.

Thanks

Laurence Barker
