SP2 installed - Where is IE???

A

Ann B.

After getting advice earlier today in this group I installed SP2 for
XP. It installed fine but my IE icon was missing from my desktop.
Now, I don't find iexplore.exe in the Internet Explorer folder, but a
search turned it up in 2 locations:

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\iexplore.exe
and
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\9ded4ee34a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e\iexplore.exe

I can't seem to raise Ken or Paul who'd been advising me earlier, so
would appreciate it if someone, anyone with knowledge of this, could
tell me which path leads to the IE I should be targeting.

Thanks much!

Cheers,
Ann

Have you tried going to Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs,
and tried the Add/Remove Windows Components option?

You may be able to repair Internet Explorer from there.

You didn't read my original post - it's not there!

It's working fine from both the above locations so I'm afraid to
initiate anything from Add/Remove programs. -

Use "more" advanced Search options - in Hidden Files and Folders, and in
System Files.
Otherwise, you'll find it in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Another way: right click Start Menu button or bar, Properties, Start Menu
tab/Customize.../Show on Start menu/Internet.. check
Another: enable QuickBar - in Taskbar properties.
Easier, browse the net from Windows Explorer
Hope that'll get you started :)

Is this directory present?
ieexplore.exe is missing from that path. It exists in the 2 paths I
posted earlier and is working from those paths. Is that normal after
loading SP2?

Ann

Hello... Righty....

If you go to Start
-> Run
--> type in sfc /scannow

That will run Windows' system file checker thing, which may ask for your
Windows CD and will basically scan and repair any system files iexplorer
being a system file it should sort it out.

I have iexplore.exe in this directory on both of my computers.
One is running SP1 and the other is running SP2.

The shortcuts point to this location.

Paul, hi. Was trying to raise you before but couldn't. Welcome back.
Think I've resolved this - I installed IE from Control Panel -
Add/Remove Programs and the .exe is now back in C:\Programs\Internet
Explorer. Put an icon on my desktop and it works fine. So - hopefully
all will be OK.

Really appreciate your advice!

Do you always monitor this group? If not, perhaps I could have your
email address just in case I run into a disaster?? :)
Cheers,
Ann

Thanks, Mark. I reinstalled it from Control Panel and now
everything's where it should be and working! :)

I usually keep an eye on this group, but today has actually been the first
day in a while I've posted a lot, due to my usual place being so quiet
lately - but due to the sheer volume of posts here it's impossible to keep
up with all of them. I do however keep more then two eyes on
microsoft.public.windowsxp.games which is a lot easier to keep up with
things.

My email address is valid once you remove the nospam and replace it with
what's at the bottom of my sig. Although it's always best to post to the
groups so everyone gets the benefit from it.

I hadn't scrolled down far enough to see that last bit of information.
Take care, and thanks again!

I'm not sure why you lost IE--I haven't seen that happen with SP2
before--but I'm glad to hear you were able to fix it easily.
