SP2 installation

One night several weeks ago, my computer crashed on me several times. Each
time I rebooted I received an error message indicating my computer had
crashed because I didn't have SP2 installed (and I didn't).

Weeks went by without another crash, but last night it happened again. I
tried to install SP2, but each attempt failed. After the 5th crash or so,
the computer locked up on me, and Windows wouldn't even load.

Can anyone help?

That seems like an unusual message about SP-2.
Is it actually in response to an error report?

Go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and get their hard
drive diagnostics.

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist to install SP-2:
