SP2 Installation

Automatic updates on my XP system is turned on. But the
option specified is that I'm to be notified of any new
updates, and that downloading and installation will occur
pending my approval.

Last Thursday morning (Aug. 19) I received a message
saying that SP2 was ready for downloading. I clicked
Yes. Yet I never received a message saying the download
had completed. Neither was I was prompted to click OK
for installation. As a result, there's nothing visible
on my system to lead me to believe that SP2 has actually
been installed.

Yet, if I go to Add/Remove programs, I find sixteen
entries labeled: Windows XP Hotfix SP2. Does this mean
they have installed, after all? If so, why are there no
signs (on my desk top or anywhere) of SP2's presence and
availability? Do I still neeed to do something to get it
working?

No, it doesn't mean that SP2 has been installed. If it were, there would be one entry for Service Pack 2, not the individual hotfixes that were included in the final SP2. If you're on dial up, it will take a while, 12 to 16 hours in some cases, and more if you're constantly using the Internet connection while you're connected. If the transfer is interrupted, it will resume where it left off, as long as you have the update for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service installed.

I have a DSL connection. And may I ask you: What is the
update for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service?
(For that matter, what is the Background Intelligent
Transfer Service?) How do I know whether I have it
installed?

Another thing: In the period since receiving notification
of SP2's download back on Thursday, my online connection
has been disconnected several time. In this an
obstacle? Should I keep my computer and DSL connection
ON at all times until the SP2 installation is done?

Thanks, Jip

The BITS service is just that. It handles file tranfers in the background. The update is for use with the new V5 Windows Update site, and it allows for things like disconnections and the like. Particularly during large transfers, such as a Service Pack. That way you don't have to stay online for the entire download. You can disconnect, and when you reconnect, it will pick up where it left off.

Information on the BITS update can be found here:

I'll try to find more information on this and how to tell if you have the update later today.

Thanks, Doug. I'll look forward to that info on the BITS
update. ...Supposing I have it, should I assume the
download/install will pick up and continue by itself?
What concerns me is that the level of downloads has
remained static for a couple of days now. Add/Remove
Programs shows that I am still at 16 SP2 Hotfixes.
