Well there you have it. I waited a year to install Service Pack 2, and now
I'm sorry I did. Maybe someone can head me in the right direction.
Downloaded and installed SP2 from the Windows Update Site. After installing
I can not access Windows as User #1. BIOS loads, Windows seems to load
right up to the log in screen. If I select User #1 the system goes to the
Wallpaper screen and no further. No icons appear on the screen. No start
up programs are loaded. Mouse moves, ctrl/alt/del opens the Task Mgr, but
nothing else. Curiously if I log on as User #2 I get full access, entire
system works normally. I would do a System Restore except User #2 doesn't
have admisintrative rights. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Before one installs SP2 you need to have CHKDSK C: /F In place for the
restart...From here,on start up,tap the F8 key,select safe mode,open xp
as administrator,run system restore.Other option,boot to xp cd,select r for
recovery, select 1 for disk C: Press enter key for password, then type:
CHKDSK C: /R When its thru (15-20 min.) type:EXIT Let xp start, remove cd.

In <edited Andrew E's post for clarity>

Before one installs SP2 you need to have CHKDSK C: /F in place for the
restart...
From here, on start up, tap the F8 key, select safemode, open XP as
administrator, run system restore.
Other option would be to boot to XP cd, select r for recovery, select 1 for
disk C: Press enter key for password, then type: CHKDSK C: /R
When its thru (15-20 min.) Type: EXIT Let XP start, remove cd.

Since this post is almost understandable and doesn't look dangerous, I would
be very interested if this worked for the OP or anyone else with the same
problem. Please post your results from Andrew E's recommendations.

Suggestions from Andrew E did not work. I tried chkdsk first without
success, then administrator in safe mode...unbeknownst to me Sys Restore had
been turned off. Never used it since installing xp but had no idea it was
turned off. Then tried reinstalling windows in repair mode...same result as
chkdsk...nada. Any additional suggestions?
