SP2 Incompatible with my computer (ASUS P4C800, 9600SE, SATA)

M

Matthew Harrison

I have a P4C800 Deluxe M/B, 200Gig Seagate SATA drive, 1GB memory and
9600SE video card.

The service pack installs fine, but on reboot it crashes @ agp440.sys.

Disabling agp440.sys, just moves the crash to the driver before (so
obviously the problem occurs after agp440.sys).

Have tried a normal upgrade (from my original setup), an upgrade from a
full SP1 install (including drivers), an upgrade from a full SP1 install
(with nil drivers) and installing from a slipstreamed SP2 CD (self made).

All exhibit exactly the same issue.

Is there anything I can do ?

Try booting into safemode and remove SP2 from Add/Remove, but from the looks
of it, your options are probably limited to a clean install, with the
possibility of using the slipstreamed version as the clean install media.
This will at least save you time applying the updates.
The post troubleshooting attempts you list probably negated any possibility
of data recovery.
As a fyi for the future, try to make the least amount of hard drive disk
accesses when troubleshooting a boot up problem.
If you can't boot to your current configuration, it is very likely your
information is intact, but you may need to have a professional data
retrieval specialist to get the information.

Can't boot into safe mode.

Already tried a clean install of the slipstreamed version - same issue.

No worries about data recovery - all my data is on a separate partition.

Mainly concerned about my future with Windows, if I'm not going to be
able to get more updates in a few months (when SP2 gets forced).

Should be no problem with a in complience system, as the Windows SP2 update
rollout will probably address many problems people are encountering with the
currently available developer SP2 versions.

Mmm, what BIOS version do you use? Asus has finished the 1017.004 BIOS
version - available for download/update at Asus sites in Germany and
Taiwan... maybe asus.com too.
Otherwise, temporarily disable Hyper Threading and leave all other Advanced
Settings on Standard or Auto.
Another thing to try, revert to XP original vga drivers.

Its the SATA drives doing it. In your bios go to legacy
support for SATA should work then. I have a suttle XPC
with the same problem. Others have worked around it
changeing to Legacy SATA. Xp sp2 seems to be barfing when
you have ONLY sata drives.

I also have a Prescott cpuwith an ASUS P4C800 mobo (no SATA drives
though, just plain old IDE). I guess the cpu or mobo has some kinda
compatibility problem with SP2.

It's got to be a prescott issue. Try dissabling the CPU L1\L2 Cache in Bios
and see if it let's you go through the logo screen. I bet it will, but you
need patience (10-20 minutes) to get into windows. Then you can uninstall SP2
(once again be patient, it takes some time)... Let us know if the L1\L2 Cache
makes any difference. I am not sure about the SATA thing. As for the VGA
suggestion that people said, I tried 4 different graphics cards:

-A ancient 8MB S3 Virge/DX PCI card
-A old 32 MB nVidia Vanda AGP card(from a Compaq Desktop PC that SP2
installed succesfully)
-An Asus Radeon 9200 AGP card (128Mb)
-An Asus Radeon 9600XT/TVD AGP card (128Mb)

The problem continued to exist even with all these cards. I also tried other
memory SIMMs, and problem continues. So, it's either a CPU related problem or
a thingy with SATA but the L1\L2 Cache things makes me think of the CPU and
the way the mobo communicates with it. I already phoned both MS and emailed
Chaintech (my mobo is the Apogee 9PJL). MS said they don't have anything to
offer at the moment, and Chaintech said it's a MS-related problem. So, we are
stuck in the middle of nowhere!

I find this very interesting..!
I have an Asus P4P800-E M/B, Maxtor 40Gig Ide HDD, 512Gb Ram and a
Radeon 9200SE (256Mb).
I have exactly the same error as above!
I haven't found any answer to installing SP2, since trying all options
it just won't seem to install without coming to the same sticky end.
I'm wondering whether this could be an issue with the new breed of
Asus boards, perhaps a bios issue? Either that or it just happens to
be a coincidence..?

The only thing I haven't tried is a slipstreamed XP/SP2 disk, and
until SP2 is available as a single downloadable file, I'll have to
leave it as SP1.
I have applied for an install CD, but that could be weeks away.

Regards,
Paul

Don't have an answer but I have an Asus P4C800Deluxe, 2 Seagate 120
gig SATA HDs, and 1 Gig Ram. After following the instructions at
http://ww3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm I downloaded the IT SP2 and
it installed flawlessly on not one but three identical machines.
Again, don't have an answer for you, but it doesn't appear to be ASUS
related.

YMMV HTH

One other thing is I have an ATI 9600 XP 128meg video card in addition
to the items on my previous post.

Is there anything I can do ?

I had the same problem.
I found the solution :
activate the plug and play OS in your bios,
and reinstall xp2
pay attention to use a whql certified driver for your video card, an
all works fine !

You guys might want to check this out: http://tinyurl.com/64kvn

I have a P4P800 asus board + a 3.0E prescott I just installed whic
both seem to be a common circumstance to this problem. Both microsof
and Asus recommend upgrading your BIOS. I have yet to do this, bu
I'll keep you posted.

Yup, it works. I flashed my bios (ver 1017 for a p4p800) and it boot
successfully.

Good luck all!
