Turned on computer today and sp2 was no longer installed. Does anyone know
what could have happened? It was there yesterday. Automatic updates now
advises me sp2 is ready to be installed.

Somebody could've used System Restore for some odd reason, uninstalled SP2,
or messed with your registry. Is there anyone else who uses your computer?

Try System Restore. If that doesn't help then you have to reinstall XP SP2.

yes my children use the computer but I'm absolutely sure they didn't use
system restore. I checked. How they would get to reg. is beyond their
wisdom. I do however have backup reg. key on my desktop. The only change
would have been trying to get my e drive to accept my drive as a cdrw. So...

TRried to restore and didn't help. I will re-install it but I just can't
figure out what would have caused it to disappear.

You could try restoring your registry backup, but in the end, you may very
well have to reinstall it.

Are you sure it's actually gone and not just corrupted files? Right click on
"My Computer" icon on the desktop and select properties, or open System
applet from the classic view of the control panel, or even press the WinKey
+ Pause/Break. Any of those will bring up system properties and will tell
you if you have SP1 or SP2 installed. Automatic updates has been known to
lie before when files have become corrupted.

Never presume that children are not capable of something like this. My 8 yr
old daughter decided to download some games and installed and configured
them while I was doing my work at my desk.Asked where did you learn this,
and the reply was that one of her 2nd grade classmates told her how to do it
and told her the URL also which she remembered without writing it down.

That's beautiful! My 6 year old daughter can now officially burn a CD as she
wanted to make a CD with a bunch of her song on it so she used JetAudio to
extract the files she wanted from the different CDs and then used the same
application to burn the CDs. She's made quite a few since the first time,
I've only had to show her once. She defrags her own PC, she boots it, shuts
down properly, prints to a networked printer, and generally keeps it up and
running better than I do. It's kind of funny as I bet she's the only kid in
the 1st grade who prints her homework at times.
