Can anyone tell me if service pack 2 is a collective update. I have just had
a HD go south and am going reinstall WinXP Pro on the new one. Question is
can I reinstall XP and only have to apply SP2 or will I have to go though
SP1 and all updates between then and now?

Service Pack 2 replaces Service Pack 1 in its entirety.
Therefore, you should only install Service Pack 2.

I would suggest creating a slipstreamed version of Windows XP
with SP2. Otherwise, install SP2 before installing your programs.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

SP 2 is cumulative

Sorry bout the post. Found my own answer. SP2 is cumulitive which precludes
the need for any other update. However, after reading some of the other
posts about SP2 problems I wonder if Linux wouldn't be a better
alternative.....????

I should know by now that the answer is always there if you look long
enough.

Q. "I wonder if Linux wouldn't be a better alternative.....????"

A. No. Windows XP w/SP2 is a state-of-the-art operating system.

SP2 is a solid, secure release. You may wish to view the following:

If you want to do Linux, ok, but you are right now the best placed
to get a good install of XP SP2, since you are doing a fresh install
of XP. What have you got to lose?

The answer should have been another question: "Better for what?". In
my experience Linux, HP/UX, Solaris and all the other Unixes do some
things better than Windows machines. But Linux for a desktop as a
replacement for XP? I don't think so!

Cheers,

Cliff
