SP2 Firewall blocks outgoing FTP requests

J

Jaelani C. U.

Hello,

Been using SP2 (WinXP-Pro) for a week and it's running smoothly up until
now...
Now I can't connect to ANY FTP server using ANY application.
I don't use any proxy server and since SP2 installed, I never had to press
the Block button when the Firewall Exception dialog appears (always
pressed on Unblock button).

This never happened when I'm still using SP1 (firewall enabled).
Since SP1, all firewall settings are set to default.

Now I have to disable the firewall whenever I need to connect to a FTP
server.

Does anybody had experienced something like this?

Try this.....

Open internet explorer to a website. Click "tools"->"Internet
Options"->"Advanced" tab. Now scroll the list and put a check mark in the
option to "Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)"

Now try your ftp site.

Assuming you are connecting to FTPs on a standard port (21)..

Is your Application Layer Gateway service enabled? It must be started for
active mode FTP requests to be made on port 21.

I have the same problem with the DOS FTP program (FTP.EXE). If I turn off
the firewall it works. If I turn on the firewall it fails.

I add PORT 21 to the exclude list, it still fails.
I add FTP.EXE to the program list, it still fails.
I try changing the Use Passive FTP setting in IE (through this is not IE)
and it still fails.

Any suggestions?

Uninstall SP2.

Simple. Painless.

It worked for my FTP problem. And my modem problem. And my USB scanner
problem. And my son's chat program problem. And my time with my wife
problem.

Good Luck!

I think this may relate to it being a DOS program, which will be taking
its access round through the emulator; you may need to give the
exception to ntvdm or even wowexec rather than the program.

Or move to a Windows based FTP - there are good free packages

Alex,

I get the same using FTP Commander (Windows-based and works perfectly well
otherwise). Though I haven't investigated further as I don't feel the need
for two firewalls.

I use FTP Explorer - www.ftpx.com without troubles
Have it set as an Exception program in Windows firewall, or as a 'all
actions permitted' in other firewalls

Because I have a selection of wget updaters that were also affected I didn't
get round to dealing with them seperately from FTP Commander. Setting those
as an Exception didn't work so I didn't pursue it, but I'll test that along
with the seperate DOS FTP solution (though not right now as I'm on a ME-only
machine).
