sp2 Copy Error: sprb0411.dl_.

Second try installing SP2. XpPro. Attempting install by using a copy of the
SP2 CD and installing from that copy while in SAFE mode (recommended by MS
tech support)

I get the following error:

Copy Error
An error occurred while copying file sprb0411.dl_.
Cannot copy file to destination directory.
Click Retry to retry the operation or click Cancel to

that's it.
When I search for sprb0411.dl_, I don't find any such file mentioned on the
internet. I assume it's supposed to be sprb0411.dll. That is indicated on
fileproperties.com as being an SP2 file.

But no idea how to correct this problem.

Any suggestions welcome.

I have a Microsoft-provided CD. The first time I attempted to install from
CD in normal mode. After aborting installation due to a copy error, I lost
most of my functionality. With the assistance of Microsoft, via Chat, we
were able to repair Windows from the XP CD. After that was all over, the
support professional suggested I attempt again to install SP2.

But he suggested I copy the contents of the CD to my hard drive, then boot
into SAFE mode and install from the copy. That's where I am now. In SAFE
mode with a copy error.

..dl_ indicates that it is a compressed file, as on the CD, which the
first phase is trying to expand to .dll

The program on the CD is really a big self extracting library of
compressed files, which it starts by running to extract to a work
folder, expanding them in the process. And something is causing that to
fail. For which the most likely reason is that the copy CD is not in
fact a good copy, but has damage at this point. Free CDs are plentiful,
try an original one as from MSoft, rather than a copy

Sorry Alex, you might have missed the follow up I posted this morning. I
have an original Microsoft CD. I copied the contents of the CD to my hard
drive, booted to SAFE mode and then attempted to install from that copy.
This was at the suggestion of MS support.

Hi

It could be the target file that is the problem, and not the source.

Search the hard disk for the file sprb0411.dll (not sprb0411.dl_), and
be sure to include "Search system folders" and "Search hidden files and
folders" in the search.

If you find any instances of the the file, rename it/them, and then try
to install SP2 again.

If that doesn't cut it, some log files you can check for any clues
or error messages:

%windir%\Svcpack.log
%windir%\setupapi.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You might need to enable verbose logging to find the "real" reason
in one of those log file, see here for how to enable it:

Thank Torgeir. I'm doing that search and then I'll call the toll-free sp2
support number for a walk-thru. For the newsgroup's info, I'll post the
final fix (assuming there will be one) here.

Well, this has turned into a nightmare. I called SP2 support and mentioned
this idea of finding the file and renaming it. No dice. they wanted me to
cancel the installation. This, of course, rendered my operating system
unusable again. As SP2 backed out of my system, it hosed up something in
there. Now the computer just repeatedly re-boots.

The support guy suggested putting in the XP CD and running a repair program.
I did this last week too. But this time the repair program wouldn't work.
Said it couldn't find a file. The support guy said it was something wrong
with "the hal"...whatever that is. Starting trying to talk about the
computer's manufacturer.

there is no manufacturer. this is a 3 year old computer I had built by a
consultant who is now out of business.

So the machine is turned off and I'm waiting to hear back from some person
is 'research'.
