SP2 Copy Error "setup cannot copy the file branches.inf"

I get "setup cannot copy the file branches.inf" in the middle of installing
SP2. It can'd find the location to copy the file from. It gives me a default
path; something like "C:\dc(then a bunch of
numbers)]i386\update\branches.inf."

I look in that folder and the file branches.inf is there (1kb in size).

The solution suggested on the error box is "Ensure that the location
specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Windows XP Service Pack
2 Source Files" in the drive you specify."

I don't know what the SP2 source files is. I have SP2 on a CD. There's
nothing on the CD that looks like that. I point the setup at the CD but it
doesn't find the file in question (obviously there but not extracted).

I find nothing in the MS knowledgebase that seems remotely relevant.

Any ideas?

thanks for the help. First go at it didn't do it. I tried several method
suggested by the page you recommended.

I don't think I have any virtual drive software on my machine unless it's
within something else that I'm not aware of. I don't really know what it is
even. I renamed the file but it still looks for the specific file
branches.inf.

I just did a clean boot and am trying to install that way. If that doesn't
work I'll try a safe boot. These two methods are mentioned on the page you
sent though not for this issue.
