Around the time of upgrading to SP2, or after a more recent Windows Update,
the "File and Print Sharing" service disappears from the network connection
every time I reboot. The event log shows the error "unable to add the
interface."

Searching the web, I found a number of very recent discussion forum messages
describing similar symptoms. Is this a new bug in Windows XP? Is there a
way to fix?

The following post is another example --

I found some more information regarding this strange problem. When booting
up with File and Print Sharing service installed, the Generic Windows Host
Service crashes.

What is svchost.exe doing upon startup?

Why does File and Print Sharing work when I add it later, but always crash
upon first boot?

Update - I found that this problem was caused by XP SP2 incompatibility with
the IDrive Plus software. I replaced it with a new release of IDrive and it
works. IBackup Corp needs to also update their IDrive Plus software and
make their users aware.
