Windows XP Bugs after SP2

Emerson

I think some other people are getting some of the bugs I
am experiencing after installing SP2. If any of you have
a suggestion, please let me know. Here are the bugs
described:

1. Update denial by Microsoft website.
When I click on the "Start Menu". "Windows Update"
choice, I get to the Microsoft Update website. Once
there, I am taken to the Updates page. However, when I
choose either option to update (Express Install or Custom
Install), I get the following Error:

"Windows Update cannot continue because a required
service application is disabled. Windows Update requires
the following services:

Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and
installation of critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables
faster, restartable downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting.
To ensure that these services are enabled:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click the service name,
and then click Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
5. Verify that the service status is started.

But when I try to re-start the Automatic Updates Service,
then I get the following Error:
"Could not start the Automatic Updates Service on Local
Computer.
Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because
it is disabled or because it has no enabled services
associated with it."

I have the Automatic Updates service set to "Automatic".
When I click on the "Dependencies" tab, it does not
report any service dependencies. The BITS and Event Logs
services are set to "Automatic" and they are started and
running without problem.

2. On the Taskbar, I always turn on the "Desktop"
and "Quick Launch" toolbars. However, every time that I
reboot, they never show up. I have to set them up over
and over again.

3. On the Desktop, when I right-lick on any clear
area and I select "properties" from the popup menu I get
the "Display Properties" window. However, this window
does not show any of its tabs (Themes, Desktop, Screen
Saver, Appearance, Settings). I found out that when I
change my current theme to another theme by using
the "Apply" button, then the tabs miraculously show up.
Therefore, in order for me to make any changes to the
desktop, screen saver, etc., I have to change the theme.
Otherwise I cannot make any other changes.

4. Crippled Explorer. This is another surprise bug
that annoys me to the point of preventing me from using
the Windows Explorer (File Manager). On the "View" menu,
I always select the view "Status Bar" which shows at the
bottom of the window. However, no matter where I click on
the file manager, the "Status Bar" disappears instantly.
No matter how many times I select it again, it continues
to disappear instantly after any left-click.

There are many other minor bugs, but I think this is
enough now. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can
help me and any other users that are experiencing the
same problems.

to get the update working, i had to turn on auto update
(basic) and then do my click for windows update again.
then i turned off auto update (as it's a pain for dialup
and i don't get to control updates needed.)

For the update problem you might want to post that question to the
experts in the Windows Update Newsgroup:

Any MS major OS upgrade has niggles. Perfectly normal.
