SP2 automatic download problem

I have been on automatic update since it came out. The last round of updates
destroyed my operating system, apparently because the existing configuration
contained drivers that are no longer supported by the respective suppliers.
The system went into continual reboot mode and I was forced to try and
restore it. Unfortunately, because my original Windows XP installation disc
is too old, it couldn't overwrite SP1 and SP2, so the re-install failed,
rendering the system drive inoperable. A new one was installed and I have
loaded the old one into a firewire drive which has made 90% of the data
accessible for recovery. However, all the files that were on the desktop
seem to be completely gone, BUT, there is one set of user profile files (with
My Documents, Desktop, etc.) that keeps coming up as "access denied". I
suspect the missing files, which are unfortunately the most critical to
recover, are there. Does anyone know how to unlock access to them?
