This question is for future reference. Should one's anti-virus
software be disabled before downloading the final version of XP SP2? I
usually leave it running when downloading Windows critical updates, but SP2
is such a huge file I thought the rules might be different.

Greetings --

While downloading? No, of course not. You should never connect a
computer to the Internet without antivirus protection in place. Don't
use the so-called "Express" install. Download the entire service pack
before starting the installation.

Now, once you're ready to start the installation, disconnect the
computer from the Internet, turn off the antivirus, and then install
the service pack.
