SP2 affects win explorer and desktop

I am unable to modify files in win explorer without doing
it in Microsoft word. Cannot delete icons from desktop to
recycle without draging to it.

Sounds like what I'm seeing.

Can you open the recycle bin and delet items from there or not?
Can you open the control panel and select items from there or not?

If not then I think that all these are examples of the same problem
with Windows explorer. It just beeps at any keyboard or mouse input.
