I installed XP clean from a XP SP1a cd and have since upgraded to SP2. I
would like to install the cmdcons onto the system but everytime i do the
install with /cmdcons i'm told my verison of windows do not match and kicks
me out. I do not want to re-install windows again as I just finding
restoring all my files. How do find SP2 compliant files for cmdcons?

Copy the i386 folder-tree from the distribution CDROM to the hard disk, i.e, c:\i386

Download the administrators install for WinXP SP2 (~266MB) and slip-stream SP2 into the
c:\i386 folder.

Assuming the the name of the executable is; WinXP-SP2.exe , the following command line will
slip-stream the i386 folder

WinXP-SP2.exe -u -s:c:\

When you are done, you can execute c:\i386\winnt32 /cmdcons to install the Command Console
and it should install properly..

You should keep the i386 folder in place. If you do, change the following registry entry.
Then whenever WinXP wants a driver or utility it won't ask for the CDROM, it will find it in
the slip-streamed i386 folder.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Change the key; 'SourcePath' to; c:\

This is the preferrable thing to do because now that SP2 is installed, you don't want to
replace a SP2 level file with a SP1 level file that was retrived from the CDROM.
