SP1 will be downloaded automatically when it is released. Obviously you can
prevent it from downloading and installing by turning off Windows Updates,
but as there are plenty of performance enhancements and fixes for earlier
bugs then it is certainly worth installing. A point worth noting is that, if
you are already fully updated with all of the current windows updates SP1
will 'only' download and install those updates that Windows Vista needs.

SP1 is a bunch of Microsoft fixes and patches rolled into one big package.
When it's ready, it will be updated via Windows Update (depending on your
settings). You are better off having it installed on your PC than without.

But we still lose the search feature of Vista, which the most usefull
feature of the whole OS, and there is noway to restore it back without
removing SP1

Why Did Microsoft removed it for everyone, they should just put the option
to remove it for those that do not want it

D

Dustin Harper

It wasn't removed. It was just given the choice to replace it with a
different vendor (Google, for example). But, it is still there and works
great.

It was not removed?

The only thing related to search that was removed is the Search item on the
right click context menu and this can be easily replaced.

M

Martin Racette

But from what I have heard, the icon to access it in the startup menu, is
not there any more, so it can not be access as it used to, you need to
access it through a folder, which limits your search options

The SP1 update removes the Search icon from the Start Menu and the Right
Click context menu.

You can easily recover most of these options by performing the following.

Go to Start and type, regedit In the results, click Regedit. This will
open the registry editor.

Navigate to the following Key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find

In the right hand pane, locate the 'LegacyDisable' value.
Right click this value and select Delete.

This will add the Search item back to the right click context menu.

You can now right click the Start Button and select Search.

Here are more ways that you can access the search window.

Press WinKey+F
Click the task bar and press F3 on the keyboard.
Open a Windows Explorer window and type search-ms: in the address bar and
press Enter.
Open a Windows Explorer window and hit F3.

But why did they removed the icon on the right-hand side of the menu, it is
the only way to really open the search folder, I tried all the other way
that you suggested and I'm stuck to only the drive C:, and I have 5 other
HDD in my computer that I need to search since they are the one that
contains all my data

When you open Search, click the Advanced search icon on the top/right side
of the window. You can select the drive and all the other options there.

Martin Racette

But right now (pre-SP1), I don't have to do that, all I have to do is to
click the seach in the right-hand side of the startmenu and just type what
I'm looking for, no fuss no muss, and now Microsoft says that SP1 will
improve Vista experience, but without the seach that experience is greatly
diminish, and so is the usefullness of Vista, which it is the most usefull
feature of this OS

Does this mean that we will still have the Search box immediately above the
Orb when we click on the Orb in SP1?

Thanks ... vanilla

M

Martin Racette

It al ready there, what it means is that you'll lose most of functionnallity
that came with Vista, the powerful search , so that you can install some
useless program such as google desktop search, Yahoo desktop search, etc
...., which they are still search for some file that I knew were there on my
HDD but that none of them except for Vista's search could find

BTW the search just above the the orb, is just for the start menu and a few
other item, you can not use it to search using the the tags, or any other
usefull information

Martin Racette brought next idea :

I'm looking for,

Instead of clicking Search in the start menu (which is gone when you
install SP1), you can just press Winkey+F. The familiar search window
will open and you can search just like you used to.

Martin Racette pretended :

That's not true. You can search for everything with the search box
above the orb.
I just tried adding a tag to one of my Word files. I searched for the
tag from that search box, and it immediately found the file.

Mark is correct. When I first got Vista a year ago, I used that little
search box for a simple *.doc search ... the files popped up in a list right
above the search box, I saw the one I wanted and clicked it. Very quick.
After awhile, my .doc counted had climbed and a search window opened with
the list. For a simple extension search, using that box is very efficient. I
am glad to know it will still be there after Windows Update begins rolling
out SP1 to home users.

Waht I meant was that it's only good if your looking for one files, but if
your looking for many files, say a project, you need a bigger windows than
the little one on the side of the start menu

As for the suggestion of using windows key and something else, I do not know
what is a window key, my windows do not have keys, they have a slider to
open ;-)

You can search the entire volume from the Start/Search Box.

Right click the Start Button and select Properties/Customize Button.

Scroll down and make sure that "Search entire index" and "Search Programs"
is selected.

The 'Windows Key' or WINKEY is on your keyboard between the left CTRL and
ALT keys. It has the Windows Logo on it. There is another one on the right
side of the keyboard.
