No Windows Fax and Scanning...

Windows Fax isn't available in Home Premium, it is only available in
Business, Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Vista. Open Control Panel and
click on the Scanners and Cameras icon. Make sure your printer/scanner is
turned on otherwise it will not be visible. The only way i can get my HP PSC
1215 to scan to the PC is to open Windows Paint, Click File on the main
toolbar and then select the 'from scanner or camera option'. HP's own
software doesn't work with Vista and HP are currently only using basic
drivers for windows Vista. They are 'supposed' to be developing a fully
featured driver for Vista, or so I was told two months ago, but nothing has
yet appeared.

The support site for my HP Officejet 5610 All-in-one tells me in order to
scan in Vista Home Premium I need to open Windows Fax and Scanning.
However I can't find that program anywhere. I did a search and nothing is
located. Is Windows Fax and Scanning in Vista or is HP mistaken?

You don't have this file?

He won't have - he's using Home Premium...

Call me crazy, but a program to operate your scanner seems a pretty petty
thing to leave out of a home OS, let alone a premium version.

Only Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate have the fax facility. I think
HP's tech support need some further training. Mind you HP outsource their
tech support and I've never found them very useful.

Now that MS has set you up by fooling you, they want you to pull out
some more cash and update to Ultimate. Business is business, you know.

I guess you won't assume that MS cares one whit for its paying customers
anymore. I know I don't.

Its not the scan that's missing...its the fax. Hard to blame MS for not
supporting an HP all in one. The problem is HP trying to get away with using
someone else's framework for their product. Guess that's why you can buy one
of their machines for under $100. None the less, next time I'll buy another
brand.

What? The program is called "Windows Fax and Scan" -- it's one program that
does both. Surely you're not saying that Home Premium includes a program
called "Windows Scan" are you?

Not at all. But my old HP program provides the scan in Vista Premium, but
not the fax. Hp should have provided the the driver upgrade for Vista to
accomplish both. After all, they sold me an all-in-one machine. I wouldn't
have bought a 2- of-of-3 machine.

As you note, Microsoft intentionally removed the FAX functionality from the
Home Premium version of Vista -- the version that is most likely to be used
or needed by home and small offices -- while retaining it in the Business
version, even thought it is far more likely that anyone who could use the
Business version would already have a stand-alone fax machine.

I am one of MANY who feel ripped off, cheated, and very unhappy.

If you could point me to some (free) fax software that would work with
Vista, I'd be very appreciative.

If you have enough memory to run Virtual PC, you could try installing WXP
into the Virtual PC and fax from there. Hopefully someone who has done it
will verify that it actually works.

There's no USB support in VirtualPC. I assume that the all-in-one device
connects through USB.

robgouver: New at this discussion stuff. Trying for scan a document and now
discouver Vista Home P. won't do it and my HP photosmart express isn't any
help. All my investigating before buying new computer didn't show up this
info. But like I hear, MS, HP etc. just want you to keep buying more and
upgrading.
