SP1 fails to install

Well - I'm glad I'm not alone in finding a problem installing SP1 on my Home
Premium (upgraded from XP) system.

My Vista laptop found SP1 as an update and installed it correctly, but my
desktop computer doesn't "see" SP1 is an available update. So, I downloaded
the program and ran it - all seemed fine with 1 of 3 and 2 of 3 configuration
stages occuring on shutdown and 3 of 3 reporting on start-up. This was
followed by: "Configuring Updates" before it reported "Installing SP1, 1/2/3
of 3" which was then followed by "Some changes couldn't be completed.
Reverting changes. Retry on startup".

On start-up Windows fails to restart reporting that "ataport.sys" is corrupt
or missing and I have to use my Vista disk to repair the original
installation and get it working again.

Any clues, anyone?

I note someone else is having problems but I've checked out the MVP's
suggestions and can report that my Compaq AMD X2 4200+ based computer has the
latest Creative software for the Audigy 4 board and that I don't having any
of the other listed "known drivers" which should prevent SP1 appearing under
Windows Update. Can anyone please offer any other solutions to get SP1
installed?
