I am getting ready to reload XP Home on a new harddrive. I have heard that
SP1 slows the computer down and it's OK to skip it. Any opinions on this?
Thanks

If you are going to be connecting to the internet in any way, load SP1 and
all the other critical updates. The slowness that's reported is not normal
for most users, you just hear about it more because of the fact that people
don't post what they aren't having problems with.

Posted 'as is'. If there are any spelling and/or grammar mistakes, they
were a direct result of my fingers and brain not being synchronized or my
lack of caffeine.

I've had no problems since installing sp1 many moons ago,
and I would think the vast majority of users would agree.

You might find it's slower to boot up for a while, I think
it must clear the prefetch folder when it installs, but
this should sort itself after a while.

It's also a good idea to defrag after installing.

I don't know to whom you've been listening, but I wouldn't take
anymore computer advice from that source, if I were you.
