SP1/SP2 Trouble

Long Story.......... A USB2 device plugged in wouldn't work. Went to
motherboard disk and learned I should go into Control Panel and delete USB
devices (which had a question mark anyway). Then d/l SP1. Already had SP1
installed. Thought I would install over first copy. D/L SP! I thought but
looked at Add/Del Programs and it said SP1a and SP2 was installed. MS
website called it SP1. Computer froze after about 99% installation. Had
lunch, still frozen. Hard boot twice, 9 and 11 min to get to the screensaver
with no icons, 2 more min until icons come up. Control panel wont launch,
Outlook Express wont launch. Reboot. Forever to get to desktop again. Delete
SP1a which freezes computer again (Ctl-Alt-Del always shows "Sys Idle Proc"
as only thing running). Finally got into Control Panel now. Now it says I
only have SP1 no longer SP2. Try to del SP1, freezes up.

Things seem to be back to normal now, still have SP1 installed and in
Control Panel, USB Devices are no longer listed. This was one of the main
reasons to buy the new computer. Appreciate any help.

Still not able to get SP1 to work with USB 2.0. How can I just get the USB
drivers installed without SP1 being activated?

1. There is no SP2 yet...at least not for public release. There are
Hotfixes listed in add/remove software that say SP2, but don't confuse
that with SP2 that MS plans on releasing sometime next year.

2. Have you tried to detect new hardware to see if it picks back up
the USB ports?

3. Have you tried to do a repair install of your XP installation?
It's easy to do and won't result in any data loss, but could fix your
USB problem. You might have to reinstall SP1, depending on whether or
not your install disc has SP1 included.

Thanks, I tried to del SP1 and re-install but it locks up the computer. I
tried to install over the current SP1 but got lockups.Re-boot gives lockups.
Safe mode doesn't allow anything I need to do. Detect new hardware just says
the USB ports installed are not high speed and things won't work as fast as
usual. I finally reformatted and started from the beginning but it still
takes 3.5 min to boot. USB is working but not as fast as advertised (I get 1
pic d/l every 4 sec). Device manager says everything is OK. I guess I'll
just have to accept it, been at it for 5 hrs today.

It may be worth updating the motherboard drivers

There is a catch 22 in this area if you use the 'Express' version of
SP1, rather than the big 'Network' download. It will not see a USB
device, as there are no drivers installed for it, so will not get that
particular upgrade. You need to get some drivers, that should have come
with the card, installed *first* and then SP1 will update them to the
Windows supplied ones.

If the card uses NEC chips, you may be able to use the drivers for
Windows 2000. Go to Windows Update, on the left select Windows Update
Catalog (you may need first to select that in Preferences)

Then choose the 'Drivers' item - second in the right pane, select Other
devices at the bottom, then select maker as Microsoft Corporation; OS as
Windows 2000 Pro RTM, and type USB in the 'contains' box. That will
give you a page where you can select these drivers and add to a download
basket

PS - just discovered that those NEC Win2000 drivers also covers Intel
and VIA ('Enhanced controllers' - ie USB 2)
