SP1 kills boot time!

Installed the SP1 sent to me in the Windows updates a few days ago and
machine has been slow to boot and generally slow ever since. It was very
much faster before SP1.

I have a Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine, 2 gigs ram, more than enough disk
space left (320gig drive half full) etc. The only change was putting in SP1.

Thinking that this could have been some sort of stuffup between Mcafee AV
and this new SP1 I uninstalled it and it did make things slightly better as
expected but of course I put it back and things were as bad as ever.

I note, on web sites, that this is a commonly reported problem with SP1 from
pre-release days.

So, anyone know any way to fix it and if not, when MS will fix that?

Thanks.

Most likely your Superfetch and Search Indexes were reset.
It will take a couple days of use to get it back up to speed.

you might viksit mcafee web site and download their uninstaller.
download either avg or avast FREE virus program.
run the uninstgaller for mcafee adn install the downloaded program you chose.

mcafee is known to cause problems with vista.

Yeah sorry but that is crap.

I have had Vista since Feb 2007 on a Vista Ultimate 64 bit where it didn't
work at first because they weren't up to date with it and also on a Vista
Business 32 bit where Macafee ran flawlessly all the time.

As for Avast, AVG does better than it and I know that from using it on the
Ultimate until Macafee got up to date.

For a couple of hours last Thursday 64 Bit Vista was available on Windows
Update by mistake.

It takes a least 5 boot occurrences and probably more before a new Vista
release learns what programs need to be used during or right after the
system boots and until it has done this it loads far too many programs/

How did you do that since the realease date via updates is not until
mid-March?

Bob,

Vista SP1 RTM has been available since early February using a Microsoft
provided registry hack. This hack is for the final release of SP1 (SP1 RTM),
not the RC and RC Refresh. Do a search and you should have no problems
finding it. I just downloaded it again yesterday after reinstalling my OS.
It also includes a new version of IE.

Yes I understand that. What I was questioning is the OPs statement that he
received it via Windows updates.

Bob,

Yes, you are correct. Microsoft accidently released the update via
Windows Update for X64 systems. They pulled it soon thereafter.
If you want SP1 now please send me an email and I will provide the link
for you to download the registry hack. The hack is from Microsoft so it is
safe to use.

This SP1 update on Vista isn't improving. It also wasn't there by mistake.
It was there. The machine takes a long time to boot, still and it also takes
a hell of a lot longer to do the same tasks than it did before SP1.

Yes that is right - because MS released it for 64 bit Ultimate! READ! LEARN!

Thanks C.B.

I plan to wait until SP1 is available as an update and even then I'll wait a
while to see if others are having problem with it before I install it.
When I asked the question I was thinking perhaps the OP was having a problem
due to an unauthorized version of it.

Bit of irony in these two statements, don't you think?

What the hell has that got to do with the problem? Vista SP1 for 64 bit
Ultimate still STUFFS the machine. It has a horrible boot time (around 3 or
4 minutes now compared to about 30 seconds prior to SP1) and it is so SLOW
you would think you were running a 2Ghz machine with 256megs ram!

Your link was no help.

Sorry but wrong. As I said before, the SP1 release for Ultimate 64 bit
came out in the last week. You should have read my original message. Keep
up with the times!

Doesn't take long to decide to killfile you. You not only fail to admit
when you are incorrect, you seem to know a lot less than you think you know.
Don't bother to reply. I won't see it.

Dickwad, I got the damned file like I said. YOU were the one who had to
admit to being wrong you utter fool. What proves you are a fool is not only
your inability to admit you are wrong but also that you actually use a
KILLFILE. What an utter twit you are. Oh well, no worries. You have
killfiled me so I don't have to hear your foolish ruminations.
