i have tried to download sp1 but i continue to get an
error msg: Windows XP SP1 is incompatible with this
version of Windows. For more information, contact
Microsoft.
MS tells me that i have a volume license and should have
no problem doing the download thru windows update
catalog. i've tried it both ways.
any help please?

Go to Run > Start and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

If "Version 5.1 (Build 2600) is not shown, you are running an
obsolete beta version of XP for which there is no update support. If
that's the case, you need to reformat your drive and install
the released version of XP, after purchasing it.

Or....

You downloaded the 64-bit version and you require the 32-bit version
of SP1.
