SP 2 won't complete installation

I've just had to re-format my hard drive and reinstall Windows XP Home. All
went fine and I allowed Windows to automatically update.........till I got to
Service Pack 2.

The first twice that I tried to install SP2, it was from the automatic
updates. It stuck halfway through, crashed and I ended up having to start
from scratch again.

This time, I've went onto Microsoft's website and tried downloading it from
there. It seems to be stuck again at the halfway point.

I've got two screens up:

One says the updates are being installed and that initialisation is done and
it's installing Service Pack 2, 1 of 1. There's a little cursor blinking, but
the progress bar is stuck at the halfway mark (again) and it's been like that
for the past three hours.

The other screen says it's running processes after install and it's
finishing installation. It's stuck at the halway mark too and has been for
the past three hours.

Should it take this long to install SP2? I've checked in Task Manager and
both applications are showing as running.

Can anyone help solve this problem please? It's driving me mad.

Hi Alison,

SP2 must already be installed for the Windows Update site to work correctly.

You can get the download directly from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Download the file, and save it to your desktop. It's a 266 MB download, but
it will only install the components you need. After the download is
complete, just double-click on this file to install.

And if/when you have been able to get SP2 to install, you have the small
matter of 90-100 security/critical updates to play catch-up.
Good luck
