SP 2 start up problem

loaded and installed sp2 ( took 7 hrs. using 56K modem),
and tried to start up my computer the following morning.
i have a sony vaio laptop frv35. windows xp does not
load. it displays the sony vaio emblem and windows xp
graphic on screen but continually clicks off the power
and automatically restarts. this action repeats over and
over. i put in my start up disk and am able to go into
the recovery screen using my recovery disk 1. here's the
problem: it does not allow me to choose the first
choice "hard drive recovery" to a preexisting date. i
don't want to lose all my info. on the c drive and just
want to recover the drive back to the time before i
installed sp2. is there a workaround to get into safe
mode and remove the sp2 back in the program remove/add
screen? or, how can i activate the "choice' to recover
drive from a specific date? this group is fantastic and
i have always solved these dilemmas through kind,
knowledgeable people in this forum. hope i get some
responses. thanks again, ej

Disclaimer: I'm not familiar with Using/recovering a Vaio, so cannot give
specific instructions to fix your laptop. So the following may make your
system much much worse.

According to Sony Vaio's support site, you need to update a number of
drivers to get SP2 to work. Sounds like your computer is blue screening,
then rebooting automatically.

Can you start the computer in safe mode (hold F8 at boot)? If you can,
remove service pack 2 there. To see what your computer was blue screening
with, uncheck "automatically restart" from Control Panel -> System ->
Advanced -> Startup and Recovery Settings -> System failure.

If you can't boot in any of the safe modes:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314446
"Black Startup Screen Is Briefly Displayed, Computer Restarts Repeatedly"
(basically, you need to get xp to use the backup registries from C:
\Windows\Repair).

Before you try and install SP2 again, check out:
