SP 2 firewall vs Zone Alarm

Chrisssssssss

My new computer has SP1 installed and I am thinking about downloading SP2.
However, I've heard that it sets up Windows own firewall by default. This
would cause conflicts with Zone Alarm I understand. This raises three
questions:
Should I install SP2?
Which of the two firewalls is best?
How do I install SP2 without conflicts?
Any advice appreciated.

Yes, you should install SP2. Backup your data or set a restore point prior
to installation. SP2 turns on its firewall by default but you can disable it
manually in Control Panel/Windows Firewall. If you're using ZoneAlarm, just
disable the XP firewall like you do with SP1.

Which is best? You'll get biased opinions about using 3rd party firewall
software. SP2's firewall is fine for home users and continues to address
inbound traffic only. ZoneAlarm addresses both inbound and outbound. So,
it's your choice based on your preferences.

What conflicts are you concerned about if you install SP2? When I installed
it, I had no conflicts. If you're referring to the Windows Security Center
and how it doesn't "see" some anti virus software, you can remedy this by
checking a checkbox to monitor your anti virus software yourself within the
security center.

Hope this helps.

It *might* There are no certainties, although I recommend running
only a single firewall.

Yes.

Zone Alarm, primarily because it monitors outgoing traffic, not
just the incoming traffic that the Windows firewall does,

Just do it. With ZA present, the WIndows firewall shouldn't be
turned on, but if it is, just turn it off yourself.

ZA is more comprehensive. With the latest version, when it starts up at
boot time, it will take over and turn off the Windows one, though there
is no difficulty if the two were both running; just doing part of the
job twice.

There won't be any from this; but we have put together guidance at
Installing SP2:

Mostly it is a matter of making sure the system is free of spyware and
the like, and doing the install on as clean a boot as possible. And I
would get the free CD rather than using the downloads from Update

I get the feeling you're saying this because you work for them.

As I said B4: I have ZoneAlarm, I have AVG, I have
DCOMbobulator, and every check I do @ GRCs 'Sheilds Up' gets a passing grade
of TruStealth.
