SP 1, 2, 3, or 4 will not install

I need to install SP2 for Windows 2000. Before the
download and sometimes just before the install is
complete, all the files disappear. No error messages. I
started with SP2. When I was unable to install SP2, I
tried SP1, then SP3, then SP4. For SP4 I get install
completed, but when I run the "search for needed upgrades"
SP4 comes up again. I cannot find any indication that the
install happened. This is being done on a laptop (Think
pad 600) that I purchased from a company going out of
business. It was networked at one time, but I am not
using it on a network
now.

I recommend posting on Windows 2000 setup newsgroup for possible
suggestions.
