My problem is this; if I have a mp3 playing, I can
still hear windows sounds, other sources of audio (like a
IE browser window). In Win98, when you had Windows Media
playing, all other sounds would be muted. Is there any
way I can customize the audio setting to do this?
Thanks for your help

Sound cards are capable of playing more than one media type at a time.
While playing *.mp3 files, lower the slider for Wave volume. Open the main
Windows volume controls or the mixer for your sound card to do this.

sounds were NOT muted when playing mp3s on all windows platforms
You are mistaken.

I love how you tell me I'm mistaken. YOU are mistaken,
this most certainly did happen when I was running Win98 SE.
Whenever I ran windows media, it took priority over all
other audio. That includes browser, windows sounds, im
programs, etc.

Windows did not work that way.
Perhaps a third party program did that for you, but windows did not.
