Sounds go away after restart

I am running Win XP Pro SP2 and my sound scheme box is always blank after I
restart (no sounds after restart). I noticed this after I
installed/upgraded Netscape browser 8. When I reset the sound scheme for
sound it is ok until I restart again.

If you were talking about the audio "volume control" icon, when you
reset, did you choose "Apply" then "ok" ? (don't just click "ok")

In the sound properties the start.wav sound always gets unselected. The
sound scheme box is usually blank.
