Sounds and Audio Devices Error

I recently tried to install a Lame mp3 audio codec - now I am unable to
open the 'Sounds and Audio Devices' icon in my Control Panel. Needless
to say that the audio codec did not install and now my audio codecs are
all hosed. Can anyone help me out here or point me in the right
direction? Thanks.
