I was having problems with programs running in the background, so
decided to run msconfig and disable some things. Well, it increase
my computer's speed noticably, but it also knocked out my soun
card

I can't even hear the windows sounds. I tried downloading ne
driver's, but my comp. isn't even recognizing that I have
soundcard. Then, I tried to add new hardware, but the menu wont eve
open. I also tried to open my sound card options and it wont ope
either.

I also went into device manager and the list is totally blank. Wha
did I do? :angry

turn all back on one at a time in msconfig until the sound works.....
or uninstall all sound related stuff from add remove then reinstall
or use a restore point

What [do] I do?

1. Go into Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the
drivers and/or companion software for the card.

2. Shut down.

3. Open the case and pull the card.

4. Reboot.

5. Shut down and re-install the card.

6. Reboot.

The new hardware wizard should appear and re-install the drivers. You
may be prompted for a CD; have it ready.

Next time you run MSCONFIG, know what the impact of your actions will
be.

Good luck,

Use System restore, go back about a week. Then, run msconfig again and
check all programs against the list at www.sysinfo.org so that you don't
disable something vital. -Dave

Did you disable services or startup programs?

"No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311504

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, set the startup type for Plug and Play to
Automatic. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start , click Run , type services.msc , and then click OK .
2. Double-click Plug and Play .
If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK .
3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic , and then click OK .
4. Close Services.
5. Restart the computer.
