Soundcard must install "Manually"...?

Howdy,

I have a (modest) hardware problem that I cannot resolve:

Whenever I boot my system, it comes up with no sound. No
errors, just no sound.

At that point, if I go into Device Manager, I see the
soundcard with a Bang on it. I cannot get any information
about a possible resource conflict, because the system tells
me that it is using no resources because it is not running.
(Hey... makes sense).

But here is the odd part:

I then click to "Uninstall" the sound card, and then click
to "Scan for new hardware."

Windows finds the sound card, asks where to look for the
drivers, I point to the folder that has 'em, and then the
card installs perfectly every time.

I have attempted to install from the card's CD many times,
but always get caught in this "double installation" process.

What might be the solution?

Sincere thanks,

Right-click the bang, properties what error code do you find?

Hi Dave,

'Sorry for not having included that:

"This device cannot start Code 10"

Thanks,

System bios problem, driver problem, and or defective hardware are three
that come to mind.

| Hi Dave,
|
| I will certainly check to see if an updated driver is
| available, but...
|
| What might you make of the fact that I can install the thing
| "manually" with no trouble?
|
| Thanks,
|

I have a problem with sound too. I have two installations of w2k
professional and the first is internet and my main work area. The second
is really just in case the first totally crashes. The sound always goes
out on the first installation after a while but the second installation
just keeps on going. Sound blaster 16 PCI so it isn't the latest high
tech card. It is just a pain to have to boot into the second
installation. Once the first one dies I can get the sound back with a
repair using the installation disk but then I have to straighten up a
lot of other things. The motherboard is an MSI KT4V if that helps. It
also does not matter whether I have a gigabyte or 128MB. Could it be a
firewall or anti virus program?
I have
AVG, Zone Alarm, Sygate 5.5, SpyBot, SpywareGuard, and EasyAntivirus
all co-existing. The sound does work with all of these but just dies
after a while.
Any ideas?

Check Event Viewer for errors. Check Device Manager for error codes and or
non-starting devices.

Hi Dave,

I found the most recent driver, installed it, but have the
same (minor) problem...

I thank you for your help,

Might be they'll exchange it for you.
