Am having same problem. The idea of editing elsewhere (in another sound
editing program) seems correct.
It appears that, even though you set a Stop time for that sound in
PowerPoint, it amounts to a non-distructive edit, i.e, the full file for
the
sound is still there on that slide and will hang it up for the amount of
time
it take the sound/song to play.

I believe this is a bug in some versions of PPT.
For best results, edit your sound file in sound editing software to trim
of the first :45 of the track so that you can play it from the
"beginning" in PPT.

I have a presentation set up where I want to start a sound track in the
middle of the song I'm using. I set a Custom Animation for the sound
track where I specify that the Sound track start playing at some time
after the beginning of the track (e.g. 00:46 into the Sound Track).
The sound track starts at the desired time, but the slide that the
sound track is linked to fails to advance automatically. It will
remain on the present slide until the entire sound track is completed.
If I start the Sound Track at the beginning, the slide will advance on
the timing que. Any suggestion?
