Sound skips?

The sound on my computer recently started skipping. For example, in
Media Player, I will hear the sound from a song for 2 seconds, then
nothing for 2 seconds. It will continue that way until the song has
finished playing. This also happens on Flash sites that use sound.
Everything plays fine minus this skipping with sound. I'm thinking it
must be something with the sound card driver since it occurs with
anything playing something. The Windows dings and system sounds are
fine.

Any suggestions?

What happened just before this started?

Is your soundcard on the Windows 2000 HCL, or any other HCL for that matter?
I have gotten by with a rather old sound card that was on the Win98 HCL,
IIRC. Under WinME, I occasionally had some skipping, but not under XP. Now I
have to use chipset drivers, and the latest version does not work with my
card at all. Still, I was quite ready to move on to a more current sound
card, chosen from the appropriate (WinME) HCL.

System sound files are pretty short, maybe that's why they don't skip.
I'd re-install the soundcard and drivers and move it to another slot if
it's a PCI card. Might be an IRQ problem and moving it to another slot
may make the system use another IRQ for it.
