Sound quality

I've successfully burned my first CD, but have a lot of popping and
distortion. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for improving sound
quality.
I'm only interested in playing CDs in my home CD player (not in WMP), and
all my music has been legally downloaded.

Thanks for any suggestions or help.

Burn them at 12x. Many older players have problems with the reflectivity of the
disc if you burn them at high speeds.
