OK, if you can hear start up and shut down, the speakers are probably ok.
Double click the speaker icon, or right click and choose "open volume
control".

Options, properties, playback and make sure wave, line in, cd player are
checked. Make sure master volume is set about half, don't mute anything
except the microphone. Move sliders up on cd, see if you can now hear the
cd player...keep playing with other controls if that helps.

Did the sound ever function correctly? If it did, when did the problem start? Can you
remember if you installed any software/hardware/updates at the time that the sound stopped
functioning correctly? Or, can you remember changing any configuration settings at that
time?

If you mean that you upgraded to Windows XP: Uninstall the sound drivers from Device
Manager. Go to the web site of the maker of the sound card, and download and install the
latest Windows XP compatible drivers for that card, and install them according to the
documentation.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I believe that your first post said that it was NOT onboard
sound, that it was a card. At any rate: Uninstall the sound drivers from Device Manager.
Then, if you have a name brand system (e.g. Gateway, Dell, H.P., etc., go to the company's
web site, click on the support link, and there will probably be a link for downloads. You
will need your system model number or serial number to determine which drivers are correct
for your system. You will probably be given a group of categories to select from like
Video, Sound etc.. Download the Windows XP compatible drivers for the onboard sound for
your system, and install them as documented. Not knowing how old your system is, it is
possible that you might have to update your BIOS. Or, if you system is too old, there
might not be Windows XP compatible sound drivers. In that case you can disable the
integrated sound in the System Setup (BIOS), and purchase a PCI Windows XP compatible
sound card, some of which are REALLY inexpensive.
