Maybe I misunderstood, but I believe that your first post said that it was NOT onboard
sound, that it was a card. At any rate: Uninstall the sound drivers from Device Manager.
Then, if you have a name brand system (e.g. Gateway, Dell, H.P., etc., go to the company's
web site, click on the support link, and there will probably be a link for downloads. You
will need your system model number or serial number to determine which drivers are correct
for your system. You will probably be given a group of categories to select from like
Video, Sound etc.. Download the Windows XP compatible drivers for the onboard sound for
your system, and install them as documented. Not knowing how old your system is, it is
possible that you might have to update your BIOS. Or, if you system is too old, there
might not be Windows XP compatible sound drivers. In that case you can disable the
integrated sound in the System Setup (BIOS), and purchase a PCI Windows XP compatible
sound card, some of which are REALLY inexpensive.
