Have had a problem with sounds on my system.

I have a Asus p5s800-vm mother board.

I have just purchased a Sound Blaster Audigy sound card.

However when sounds are played, like an MP3 the sound distorts.

The sound is a type of burring, a bit hard to describe.

Reason for purchase of the s/card as mentioned was the on board sound was cactus as well.

Thanks in advance.

It is possible the problem isn't with the sound hardware.

Firstly, find out which sound sources exhibit the problem. Do the Windows
sounds (in control panel) distort? Check other inputs so you have a picture
of what is affected and what is unaffected.

MP3 files are normally played back via third-party software, and appear as a
Wave input to the sound card. . The codec used by this software may have a
problem.

I assume you've tested the speakers with an MP3 player or suchlike, and
checked that you don't have a situation like a Wave fader set to 100% and a
Master fader set very low. (which will likely result in input overload)

Finally, some sound drivers install junk software such as 'graphic
equalisers' into Control Panel or the system tray. (the only thing graphic
about them is the distortion they introduce!) If one such remains as a
remnant of the previous sound driver, it may be affecting the SB.

There are a number of possible solutions listed on Google to get rid of that
crackling/popping noise, but unfortunately, most didn't seem to work. Here
are some things to try:
-Move the card to a different slot.
-Mute anything that's not used such as Microphone, Line In, etc.
-Update the drivers.
-Update your chipset drivers (that seemed to be a working fix for VIA
chipsets, but yours is SiS, I believe).
-Change your speaker set-up in the SB options to something slightly
different.
-Unplug any wireless cards/dongles you may have installed.
-Try these drivers: http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/
Here's a list of supported and unsupported Sound Blaster Cards:

I don't believe I ever got mine completely fixed. I went to a Zalman USB
sound card a couple of years ago, and have not had the same problems I did
with the Creative cards. In all fairness to Creative Labs, the earlier ISA
cards and the SB Live! USB card worked fine. It wasn't until I tried two or
three different PCI cards (one of them an Audigy) that I experienced the
noise problems. I would still be using the SB Live! USB if it hadn't quit
working after 5 years or so of use.

Since you are replacing a "built-in" sound card (on the motherboard)
with a Sound Blaster card, have you "disabled" the motherboard's audio
card option (in the BIOS?)
