after having wiped the hard drive (which we do periodically) to get rid of
all the crap you accumulate, the music we play doesn't sound right. we've got
it amped and we know the problem isn't with the amp, so it must just be some
simple setting, but can't find what! can anyone help?

You might check and see if you have the amp input
connected to the earphone output of the sound card. I
did that once and the sound was horrible until i moved it
to the normal OUT jack. It has to do with the output
impedance and the amount of pre-amplification coming out
of the earphone jack vice the normal out jack.
