Sound Objects Linked Inconsistently Play

I routinely link sound objects in my slides. I am careful to maintain the
object file in the same folder as the ppt file. Recently, I have had several
sound objects that can't be played from within ppt. I can play each in WMP
or Real, but they won't play in ppt. Other sound objects within the same ppt
presentation and the same folder still work. It's illogical. Any ideas?

I come across that all the time.

First of all, if Windows Media Player, or Real can play the sound, it's not
necessary that PowerPoint can play it too. PowerPoint uses the old MCI Media
Player to play the sounds - look here for more info:

Many times, you can just open the sound file in an audio editor and save it
to another codec - and then PowerPoint will happily play the sound.
