sound issues

For some reason, none of the system sounds will play
(i.e. start windows, exit windows). I can go directly to
the file itself, double-click it, and it will play. But,
when you go to Sounds and Audio Devices in the control
panel, and click the play button to preview the sound, it
won't play, nor will it play naturally( i.e. play the
startup sound at boot). What's the deal? Please help.

Go to Kelly's excellent site and look up "where did my sounds go". I
believe it is in her Top Ten list. If not, try looking under "S" in the
alphabetized section.
