Sound issue

Hi

The system sounds (like Default Beep or Start Windows from Sounds and Audio
Devices Properties screen) just wouldn't play. The play button (the arrow
pointing to the right) is grayed out.

Strangely, I can play CD. I can listen to radio on the internet through
Windows Media Player.

My Dell GX110 PC is running on WinXP Pro. External speakers are connected
to output of on-board soundcard. All drivers appear ok in Device Manager.
I updated the BIOS. I updated DirectX with v9.0c. The sound test in
DirectX is loud and clear.

Please help on how to get the system sounds to play again.

Thanks
Steve

Open your Sound Properties again, and on the top portion of the window
is a down arrow, click it, and you should see Windows default sounds.
Select it then click Apply and OK. Hope it works. :~)

Thanks for the tips, but they don't work.

Yep, it's still strange. I mean, I can go to where the WAV files are in
C:\Windows\Media and right-click on them to select Play; they'll play (as
Windows Media Play opens up). In other words, the soundcard and pretty much
everything else work ok.

The things that don't work are in the Program Events under Sounds and Audio
Devices Properties. Like I mentioned, the Play button is grayed out for
some reasons.

Further tips are really appreciated.
