Have an asus P5LD2 board that sound all of a sudden quit working.
Hardware devices indicates everything is normal. Tried reloading
realtek drivers, but no change -- still no sound. Any ideas appreciated.

The sound subsystem has S/PDIF digital output as an option.
It's possible you've activated the digital output, which might
stop the analog output. Check your settings in the RealTek audio
control panel.

Another way to lose sound is, to do a video card upgrade, the video
card has an HDMI connector, and the HDMI connector supports digital
audio. When you install the video card driver package, it can also
install audio over HDMI. Visiting the Sound control panel, and
selecting the correct device (like the RealTek HDAudio on your
motherboard), would then send the sound samples to the correct
output connectors.

HDAudio consists of two components. The Microsoft UAA driver for HDAudio.
Plus a device-specific driver for HDAudio. Look under "System Devices",
for a device with a name like "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver...", as that will be
the system component for the motherboard audio. The device-specific driver
on my motherboard, is under "Sound, video and game controllers". It should
have the brand name of the audio there, which in your case would be RealTek.
(P5LD2 has RealTek ALC882 7.1 HDAudio onboard.)
