Sound In Windows XP

I am not getting any windows Xp audio/sound. Both my personal scheme setup
and windows default do not work. So all functions from e-mail notification to
IE sounds I get nada. All other sounds and audio work. Any ideas?

Open Control Panel, Sounds and Audio, Hardware tab, highlight your Audio
device and click on the Troubleshoot button. This will usually lead to a
resolution, most of the time. Also, go to the Sounds tab and in the Windows
section of the list, highlight a Windows function that has a speaker icon
next to it and click on the "play" button (that is the button to the right
of the filename with the right hand arrow head on it), you should be able to
hear the assigned sound. If there are no 'speaker icons' next to a given
action/process, that means nothing is assigned to that function and you will
need to assign a sound of your choice. If it doesn't work out, post back
with the details.

Everything is as it should be. I went through the troubleshoot and can hear
the windows sounds but they still do not work with any assigned functions.

Looks like we need a guru on this one......I have never encountered the
sounds not working in Windows if they work in the troubleshooter.

Just thought of one item, may or may not help...........
Click on Start, Run, in the dialog box type "services.msc" (no quotes) and
click on run. Scroll down the list to "Windows Audio" and make sure it is
set to 'Automatic'..........if it is disabled, right click, select
properties and change it to Automatic in the dropdown list.

do you use TweakUI? there is a setting in tweakui that can turn off ALL
sound - sometime people set this by mistake.

it's in the General branch, the "beep on errors" check box; it should be
checked; if unchecked you'll get no sound-events.
