sound help!

When trying to open Itunes I get the following message:
"Itunes had detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/video
playback may not operate properly" but I hear sound when the computer starts
up.
Occasionally my start up bar goes from Windows XP to a similar format (like
Windows 98).
Any ideas about what I should do, please?

I've got exactly the same problem, also when i click the volume icon on the
taskbar it comes up with "there are no active mixer devices available." and
its so frustrating because other sounds seem to play! Have you had any luck
in sorting it out? I'll keep looking and let you know if i find anything!

I have had a look on itunes, but I think the prob with audio/video
configuration tends to relate to itunes not starting up, rather than itunes
starting and not playing music.

one thing i've noticed is that when I go on control panel > sound and audio
properties, it says I have no audio device. Anyone know how I reinstall this,
please?

cheers for the help.

I worked it out. Control panel > administrative tools > services - My
'windows audio' had 'stopped'. If you double click on it, it gives you the
option to start it up again. Can now hear my itunes, finally! Will watch out
for my dodgy startbar though. Thanks x

Thank you so much. I have been working for hours trying to figure out how to
bring back the volume...as I had lost it few days back ...and I still don't
know how I lost it. Your advise was bang on and I just got it back 30
seconds ago and am now listen to music. Thanks a bunch once again. : )

I went into services and fixed the problem, but occasionally the taskbar
turns grey, and the sound stops again. it seems like there is a deeper issue
here. any ideas?

I have been having the same problem as everybody else as well--taskbar
turning grey, sound going off, and not recognizing the audio device.
Sometimes when I restart the computer, I can go right into iTunes before the
audio device automatically goes off again and the taskbar turns grey. The
audio device I have is a SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC. I was
wondering what kind of anti-virus software people are using and if their
definitions are up to date. It seems like something is seriously screwing
around with the computer.

I tried the advice below (twice) and also changing QuickTime to the
non-ITunes version (twice) but the error message still comes up. I had
downloaded the QuickTime and Safari updates just before it all went horribly
wrong. Any advice?
