sound events not playing

No, but turns out the registry key was blank and not the default entry. Deleting it recreated the correct default key and my sounds are finally back after almost a year! Stupid programs that modify the registry incorrectly shouldn't be allowed...

Please tell us the registry key you are referring to. I bet it was that crappy IBM software I installed once that did the same thing. Thanks.

The one described in the below MSKB article: root HKEY_CURRENT_USER. The key was "Default", REG_SZ, but blank in the "Data" field; deleting the key turned it into "{value not set)" and made the system event sounds work again.

Ah yes. Familiar with it. Thanks. You know WordPerfect does this too but my sound wasn't effected.

I tried deleting the key "<no name>:REG_SZ:Custom0", but i after i rebooted my machine, it just regenerated the exact same key. Am i doing anything wrong?? Is it the right key? It was placed under "AppEvents/Schemes"

No the application that put it there is likely using the Windows Installer Technology. Normally when we "break" one of the things the installer technology sets in the registry, then the next time we access the program we get an error and it looks as though an installation is occurring. This is just the installer tecnology replacing what we "broke." Unfortunately what may seem broke to the installer technology is just what we want. The only solution to that is to scrap the software. Jasc is terrible with this.
