Sound difficulties

I just got a new computer- so I am both cheering and groaning at the same
time.

Here's my problem- I have inserted sound files into PowerPoint countless
times, and never had a problem- until now. I am able to insert the actual
file by going into Insert-Movies and Sounds- Sound from file. When I try to
play the file, either by putting the slides into show mode, or by double
clicking on the speaker icon, it will not play at all. I can see the speaker
icon, I know my speakers are loud enough to hear, and I am able to hear a
"clip-art" kind of file that I inserted by going Insert-Movies and Sound-
Sound from clip organizer. I am using the same disc to download to the new
computer as I did for my old computer, it has plenty of licenses left, so
it's not a software error- I am using 2003. I have looked thru this website,
and have made sure that my files are all in the same folder as my
presentation, but no luck. Any other ideas?

The sound files are wav files, and yes, I deleted the file, moved the file,
then re-inserted the file, and it still did not work.

Try embedding the wav
Adjust the figure in Tools > Options >General > "link sounds with file size
greater than" to 50000 and reinsert.

If you have a speaker icon on the taskbar double click and check nothing is
muted. (or go to control panel > sounds etc > adjust volume > advanced)

Sorry if this sounds like a couple of really dumb questions. But since it's
a new computer:

Are your speakers plugged in?

Are they turned on?

If embedding solved the problem then you may have a problem with path length
to the link. This may also effect videos so its worth checking now! You can
shorten the link path by using a folder on the C: drive with a short name. --
